• The Very First Dad and Zach on Recumbents Blog

Today, we were on the Northwest River trail heading out from Falmouth park on Collin’s Road.  The brake was off when the trike was in the car at the beginning of the day and the back tire kept sliding into my arm.

I noticed the problem as soon as I opened the hatch. The truck in front of us, on the way to the park, was lost.  He was a plumber.  A truck with engine problems stopped at the light at the route 441 and route 30 interchange, to work on engine and closed the hood before the light changed.

I had to relax my arms and my grip had to lighten up because of push-up pain I am dealing with. My legs were really good, though.  Some minor chest pain (also from pushups).

We first saw a Pileated Woodpecker when we set out.  There were little blue butterflies and daffodils coming up.  A knot in a tree that looked like it shouldn’t be standing that I noticed.  I rode in tour mode then turbo for hills most of the first half. Then in the second half I rode in sport and did turbo for extra boosts. The soil at Koeser Park was soft and difficult to ride on , our normal spot in the park bench area was taken by others today.

Dad and I stopped at the White Cliffs of Conoy to view the river from a nice vantage point. You can see the ridge at that spot where the water goes over rocks, and it is very neat. There was a Blue Heron that flew over us. I have seen people go up and down the hills on foot so I know it isn’t a really far drop, but some of the spots are just a sharp drop, not a slope.  I suggested going clockwise around my favorite spot, because if you go counter then you risk sliding down the cliff. We went to see the bench at the cliffs. There is a spot down to the side of the bench with a little area that had metal sticking out of the ground.

While we were hanging out at the White Cliff’s of Conoy, we turned on the camera to record for the youtube channel.  The way back was smooth and felt nice with the temperature around 70 F.  Two older people going 15+ mph on ebikes with a chime bell on their bike to signify they were passing went by.  A guy on a trike said that, “we are people that know how to ride”, and he was, “saving his butt by using a trike”. Many walkers were on the trail at the end. We saw three other recumbents and two of which were two wheel styled.

When we were done, we had to pack up and take off shoes, and put everything back into the car. We then picked up both the trikes. The Catrike goes inside the Ford Escape, and the HP Velotechnik goes on the rack on the back. It is good when you have a plan and do the same thing every time.  The plan helps when you are tired. Getting gear into and out of the car was painless today.

We ate shrimp, chicken wings, soup, diet soda and celery with blue cheese at McCleary’s.  When we come home, mom helps us take all of the gear out of the car and we start uploading the recording and charging all the electronics for next time.

We make sure all the electronics are charged, the batteries for the trikes, the computer for Dad’s trike, the Varia radar systems , the walkie talkies, the gopro camera and the mic for the gopro.  That is pretty much the last thing we do after the ride, then we rest and recover.

We had a great ride and a fresh start to the Spring season.

    Keep on Triking!
