Coach: Allie
Partner: Don / class rolling
Today, we worked on passing open guard when bottom person has feet on hips:
- Knee cut
- Pummel and underhook their left arm
- Baseball slide
- Underhook their right and knees to their underarm and hip
From top , you grab one leg gi with right hand and their right arm gi with left hand:
- Pull up
- Go to their side
- Get knee on belly
From bottom, same as above:
- You want to get your outside foot onto their hip and keep head up (smaller surface area on the mat)
- I find I need to push with my opposite arm to get there fast enough and shrimping helps a bit.
- Pull the leg they grabbed out of their grip and put onto their hip
- Grab lapel (chest gi) and pull them down
- Get closed guard or go for their angle and behind knee with foot for the Tripod sweep.
From bottom(this move is hard for me to do):
- Do a tripod set up but when they pull leg out
- Switch grips on their arm
- Swing foot behind their left ankle
- Grab their left ankle with right hand
- Knock them down
We rolled for the last 10 minutes: I had James on top of me two or three times. He would grip me and defend against all of my attempts at sweeping him. He would move me and get around to side control in an interesting way.
I had a new white belt that I knee cut and then did the baseball slide into side control.
I faced a white belt who got inside hooks on my knees and just kind of made me fall down.
I rolled with another white belt who ran around my side into side control.
I went up against a purple belt who just sort of moved my legs out of the way and got side control. The higher belts definitely had good moves I had never experienced.
I rolled with a few other people, I think I maybe won once or twice against them, but I noticed one of my issues is dealing with their outside leg (left leg) when I would try to pass them. I did more rolls this time than any other time in a class.
One thing I hit successfully: I successfully knee cut passed a newer white belt.
One thing that failed: I failed a tripod sweep on James because he had good grips and was putting pressure on me in a way that wouldn’t allow it.
One thing I will try next class: I will try to fix my sickle sweep.
